Norman was a respected clinical psychologist and a man of quality.  He loved the state of Israel and had values similar to those of the New Israel Fund.  He very much championed democracy, equality, and civil rights for all of the people living there.  He knew that the founders of Israel wanted a home for the Jewish people but also a secular state, not one dominated by religious right extremists. He wanted the recognition and reinforcement of the essential pluralism of Israeli society and tolerance for diversity.
